Let’s Do the Walk, the Integer Walk:

Here are the 4 motion pictures we studied earlier this week.  We used verbs and adjectives to narrate the motion.

Take a few minutes to couple these descriptions with a number line.   We are able to make the following conclusions:

• -Picture #1:  Facing right and moving forward is like when we add a positive number: 4+(+1)=5

• -Picture #2:  Facing right and moving backwards is like when we add a negative number: 4+(-1)=3

• -Picture #3:  Facing left and moving forward is like when we subtract a positive number: 4-(+1)=3

• -Picture #4:  Facing left and moving backwards is like when we subtract a negative number: 4-(-1)=5

The Verb tells us if we use ADDITION or SUBTRACTION and the adjective tells us if the number we are adding/subtracting is POSITIVE or NEGATIVE.

So if we ask Lego man to face right and walk forward 8 on the ramp, we get 0+(+8)=8.  Watch him go!
